k Voracious Avionics — Resilient Navigation for Experimental Aircraft
Experimental Aircraft Avionics

Navigation that keeps working when GPS doesn’t.

Voracious Avionics is building a high-integrity GA navigation system that combines dual-frequency GPS with full-band VOR SDR, inertial sensing, and air-data — designed from the ground up for real-world resilience.

Core capabilities

A tightly integrated sensor and RF suite focused on continuity of navigation under degraded or contested conditions.

◉

Full-band VOR SDR

Software-defined reception across the entire VOR band. Independent of GPS availability and designed to maintain bearing information when satellite signals are jammed, spoofed, or unavailable.

◈

L1 + L5 dual-frequency GPS

Multi-constellation GNSS with both L1 and L5 signals for improved accuracy, integrity monitoring, and better resistance to interference compared with single-frequency receivers.

◎

Integrated IMU & air data

On-board inertial measurement and pitot-static sensing provide attitude, heading reference, and airspeed data that can be fused with RF navigation sources for continuous state estimation.

▣

FPGA-centric architecture

High-performance processing on modern FPGA silicon enables real-time SDR, sensor fusion, and deterministic timing — without the opacity of closed commercial black boxes.

⇄

Modern aircraft interfaces

Ethernet, ARINC 429, and UART interfaces with clean electrical design for straightforward integration into experimental aircraft systems and glass cockpits.

⚡

Built for experimental GA

Sized and powered for the realities of experimental aircraft: owner-maintained systems, limited panel real estate, and the need for transparent, inspectable behavior.

Technical approach

Hardware and software choices driven by performance, observability, and long-term maintainability rather than marketing checkboxes.

  • 01
Wideband VOR reception SDR architecture covering the full VOR frequency range so the system is not limited to a single tuned channel or proprietary demodulator.
  • 02
Dual-frequency GNSS front-end L1 and L5 capable receivers (u-blox F9 class) for better multipath rejection and ionospheric error mitigation.
  • 03
Sensor fusion foundation IMU + pitot-static data available for dead-reckoning and integrity cross-checks when RF sources disagree or degrade.
  • 04
Deterministic processing FPGA-based signal processing and control paths to keep latency and timing behavior predictable under load.
  • 05
Aircraft-native interfaces ARINC 429 and UART alongside Ethernet so the unit can talk directly to existing EFIS, autopilots, and experimental avionics without awkward adapters.
  • 06
Owner-accessible design Intended for the experimental community that builds, maintains, and flies its own aircraft — not a sealed black box.

Active development

Hardware prototyping and SDR / navigation software are underway. The system is being designed and flown in the context of real experimental aircraft operations, not as a laboratory demonstrator.
